Gibbons Snow Architects was awarded the contract to design a new 7,000 sq. m., 4 storey office building with underground parking and ground level retail, located in St. John’s, NL. Our client was KMK Capital, one of the largest developer’s in Newfoundland and Labrador. Sandy Gibbons was the project lead, with the assistance of Greg Snow as the lead designer. Gibbons Snow programmed, designed, and prepared construction documents for this building, and provided contract administration services. We coordinated with the other sub consultants hired by our client, who was also the project manager. The basic construction is steel and concrete. This state-of-the-art building uses a combination of high-performance curtain wall in combination with composite metal panels on the exterior to create visual interest and a great deal of natural light to the interior. From consultations with contractors our thoughts are that this would be the optimal mix for cost efficiency, construction timelines and aesthetics. The focal point of the building is the lobby atrium and glass enclosed elevator, which give a sense of verticality and light to the core. The change of materials and colours across the facade of the building help break down the massing of the building and makes it stand out as unique from the surrounding buildings in this business park and provides strong corporate presence for our client.
