Admiral’s Academy K-7 School, located in Conception Bay South, NL was completed in the fall of 2017 and GSA was the architectural lead on that project. GSA’s principal-in-charge was Greg Snow. The school opened on time in September 2017.

This facility has the capacity to accommodate up to 700 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 within a gross floor area of 6216 square metres. A total of 26 regular classrooms have been provide along with instructional and administrative support areas; challenging needs, library/resource centre complete with IT room, science lab, gymnasium, stage, music room, kitchen, multi–purpose/lunch room, computer lab, guidance room, administration suite, staff preparation/lounge area.

One of the main challenges of the project was to create a large building that was not intimidating, but inviting for young students, breaking away from the old model of a stodgy institutional building. This challenge was met by creating an architectural expression that reveals building facades as a series of alternating primary coloured “building blocks”, to express a sense of play to engage the students. These colours are then brought inside to provide wayfinding elements and provide visual stimulation throughout the building. The school’s primary grades have direct access to outdoor play areas and the school is surrounded with landscape architecture features. The upper grades have access to the exterior sports court and sports field. This school provides abundant natural light, good connection with the outdoors, vibrant colour and offers lively and engaging spaces throughout.
